The itinerary goes down the so-called "Market Road", a historic journey made up of long mule tracks - travelled from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century by emigrants, pilgrims and merchants - which connects Domodossola and Locarno through the Vigezzo Valley and the Centovalli.
The itinerary winds in a west-to-east direction, touching both the main devotional centres, in particular those located in Valle Vigezzo - a land of strong religious sentiment - and also the most important places of historic and artistic interest.
The first section of the path runs from Domodossola, the heart of the Ossola territory and location of the special nature reserve of Sacro Monte Calvario, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and immediately crosses the bridge of the Mizzoccola, towards the eastern shore of the Toce, along the historic "Way of the market". We arrive in Trontano, and follow the signs for "Mulini del Graglia", and then we reach Verigo on a comfortable mule track.
After crossing the bridge of Ca' Turbin, we pass through Mozzio and Coimo. We continue towards Sagrogno. On the western edge of this town, we can admire the oratory of San Rocco, the saint who has the most oratories dedicated to him in Vigezzo Valley.
Then we reach Druogno, where we leave the historic road to take a secondary road to the south. We reach Santa Maria Maggiore, another important devotional centre, where the parish church Chiesa Parrochiale dell'Assunta stands, the mother church of the Valley.
Therefore, we pass through the village of Santa Maria and get back on the Via del Mercato. We pass Toceno, Vocogno and Craveggia: the square of which is the location of the parish church of Saints James and Christopher, with the baptistery. Santa Marta has been called the "Piazza dei Miracoli" of the Vigezzo Valley.
Continuing along the eastern part of the valley, first we come to Zornasco, with the Church of San Bernardino of Mentone and the Via Crucis dating from the early nineteenth century, and then we go to Villette (843 m), with the parish church of San Bartolomeo.
Before continuing our itinerary, we can take a detour and go south from Zornasco along a secondary road that leads to Malesco, where we find the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul dominating the square.
Returning to the Via del Mercato, we reach Re, the last town in the Vigezzo Valley and its religious centre, with the complex of the Church of San Maurizio and the Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Sangue (Our Lady of the Blood), which was built after the miracle of 1494, which marked the history of the valley and the surrounding alpine areas. The itinerary continues along Dissimo and Olgia; then we come to the national border of Ponte Ribellasca.
After reaching Camedo, we enter the Centovalli: here the path continues on streets and mule-tracks and goes through Borgnone, Lionza, Verdasio, Pila, and finally Intragna, where the highest bell tower of Ticino is located (65 m). Then we descend to Golino, following the River Mellezza and we cross the bridge to Losone and take secondary roads to reach Locarno, the location of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso..
